Vass Gunawardena’s son arrested in Pepiliyana

Interdicted Deputy Inspector General of Police Vass Gunawardena’s son, Ravindu and another, who harboured him, were arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department in the early hours of yesterday.

Police spokesman SP Buddhika Siriwardana told The Island that Ravindu had been arrested while hiding in a house at Pepiliyana.

Ravindu had been hiding in different parts of the country and finally the CID was able to trace him to a large house in Pepiliyana. The police spokesman said the gate had been locked but the police had broken it open.

SP Siriwardana said the arrest had been made in connection with the abduction and killing of millionaire businessman Mohammad Shyam.

Last week, Colombo Additional Magistrate Mohamed Shahabdeen issued an order preventing Ravindu from leaving the country.

Kaduwela Magistrate Wasantha Jinadasa last month issued an arrest  warrant on Ravindu for failing to attend Court in a case where he has been charged with the 2009 abduction and assault of a student of Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology, Nipuna Ramanayake.

Meanwhile, sources said that Ravindu was being questioned by the CID on 72-hour detention order over the alleged crimes.

Initial investigations have revealed the suspect, arrested along with Ravindu, had been allegedly involved in several other criminal activities.

Seven suspects including former DIG Vaas Gunawardena were earlier remanded till August 14, over the abduction and murder of Colombo businessman Mohammad Shyam.
