Army plays major role in development drive - Army Chief
The government has launched a massive development drive in the country. The Sri Lanka Army is playing a pivotal role in that effort, Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya said in a message to mark Victory Day which falls today.

The Army Commander said the Sri Lanka Army accomplished a great social service during the four years that no other army in the world had been able to accomplish within a short period after the elimination of terrorism.

"Out of that social service, the service it contributed to resettle nearly 300,000 civilians displaced due to terrorist activities and to their welfare bears great significance," he said. Lieutenant General Jayasuriya said: "The government is on a massive move to develop the country and the Sri Lanka Army is also playing a pivotal role in that effort. I feel proud of the government's and people's recognition of the Army's role in that effort.

"The turning point of the victory over the three decade terrorism was the political leadership provided by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa from 2005 to 2009. While expressing that the Sri Lanka Army would provide its fullest support in the move to make Sri Lanka the miracle of Asia, as the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army I wish the government led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa the best of luck in this effort."
