Govt sources say that President Mahinda Rajapaksa has promised in writing to UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekera to give him the UPFA chief minister candidature in the oncoming North Western provincial council election.

Accordingly, Mr. Jayasekera has decided to resign from his MP post and to give nominations from the UPFA.

However, yesterday (23) Minister Basil Rajapaksa had told MP Jayasekera that even though he can be given a place in the UPFA list, the post of CM cannot be assured.

Under those circumstances the MP has decided to give up the idea of crossing over and has even worked alongside MP Ravi Karunanayake to prepare the Kurunegala UNP candidate post.

Once this news reached the ears of the President, he has hurriedly promised Mr. Jayasekera in writing that he would surely be given the CM post.

According to this new turn of events, the refreshed MP Jayasekera has informed a few UNP leaders that he would make a special statement in the parliament this evening and would resign from the MP post.

However, Mr. Ravi Karunanayake made a tremendous effort to retain Mr. Jayasekrea inside the party during the last few days.
